What causes snoring?
Snoring is caused by airway obstructions during sleep. These obstructions may be caused by several factors or a combination of factors, including obstructed nasal airways, bulky throat tissue, poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue (the tissues are too relaxed), and a long soft palate or long uvula. These cause blockages in the airway that result in snoring. Snoring occurs more frequently in men than in women and in those who are overweight. While snoring may seem harmless, it is associated with several health risks. Not all snorers suffer from sleep apnea, but most patients with obstructive sleep apnea are snorers. If you snore frequently, you may need to be tested for sleep apnea. It is important to determine if you are breathing properly while you sleep.
